Beware of Mail Order Bride Jokes

24. May 2012 by Christy 0 Comments

If you've ever discussed Russian dating with family or friends, chances are good that someone cracked a mail order bride joke. Perhaps it was you. It's important to keep in mind that while such jokes might seem like harmless fun, the ladies of Russian Love Match aren't crazy about the mail order bride label and may take offense to remarks about buying a wife.

When it comes to international dating sites, people in the West tend to kid about bulk pricing, buy one get one deals, and “Add to Cart” functions, However, the ladies of RLM may not appreciate this humor. Though you may not mean it as a slight, joking about buying a woman implies that she’s a prostitute. Naturally, women aren’t crazy about this label. Not to mention that mail order bride jokes paint Russian women as mindless automatons who have no say in their life and future happiness. The jokes also call up images of poor, miserable creatures who need to be rescued by Western men, another unflattering portrayal.

There are two major stereotypes in the international dating industry – the woman who sells herself for marriage and the creepy man who has to buy a wife. Chances are good that you resent the creepy man label and would react poorly if a Russian lady made jokes at your expense. Russian women feel the same way about mail order bride jokes and jests.

If you hope to win a special lady's heart, don't make jokes about mail order brides. It's the polite and respectful thing to do.
