Are Russian Women Feminists?

13. November 2009 by Marie 0 Comments

Many men are attracted to Russian and Ukrainian women because these ladies are viewed as more willing to embrace traditional feminine roles.

While we can't speak for the ladies on our site, Russians generally have a different view of equality and what it means. Radical feminism as it exists in the west is not part of the culture. Traditional female roles are accepted as normal.

Most Russian and Ukrainian women don't engage in a public fight for gender parity and equal pay because there is no motivation. They are generally not required to be the family breadwinners, they have few bills to pay, and many live with extended families.

Gender differences and traditional views still reign in Russia and its neighbors. In the wake of Communism, there's been a resurgence of the patriarchal family structure. Even if a woman works, she accepts that she will also take care of home and family, and perhaps earn less than her husband.

Perhaps unfairly, some Russian men stereotype "feminists" as women who shirk their home-front duties out of laziness, or lesbians, or somehow unattractive partners. Male feminists are viewed with cocked eyebrows.

Many of the women on are accomplished professionals, or they are full-time students in a highly demanding educational system.

Yet a majority are comfortable with traditional male-female roles. They know they don't have to be a "feminist" to have to lead a fulfilling life.
