Tourism continues to grow in Russia. With so many exciting events taking place in the next few years, such as the 2014 Winter Olympics, a Formula One Grand Prix, and the 2018 World Cup, it's no surprise that the government has relaxed visa requirements.
On July 30th, President Vladimir Putin signed a new Visa agreement with the United States.
"The Russian visa process is probably the only aspect of travel to Russia that has not changed since Soviet days," says Greg Tepper, president of Exeter International tour company. "It's not easy... the most unusual aspect is that it requires an invitation from an official licensed tour operator or from the hotel you'd be staying in."
Not only is the formal invitation aspect no longer a requirement, but now American tourists can return for multiple visits more easily.
"The visa used to be very specific to the dates you were going to be there, and the maximum was a month," Tepper explains. "But now, everyone automatically will get a three-year entry visa -- you can come and go as you like."
