Lectures Emerge as Popular Russian Nightlife Activity

29. October 2009 by Christy 0 Comments

Like any big cities, Moscow and St. Petersburg have myriad opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy a night on the town. Traditionally, this has often meant an alcohol-fueled romp to a bar or a dance club.

But recently, partaking in Russian nightlife has meant attending a lecture on nature photography or a scholarly discussion on the Christianization of England, or even a presentation on the latest fashions. These are just some of the many lectures and talks that have emerged as popular alternatives to the city’s evening party scene.

Thanks to a new web site, Theoryandpractice.ru, attendance at lectures in the cities has increased significantly, with many finding the events to be a less-expensive and more intellectually stimulating alternative to the bar and club scene. The event topics range greatly – everything from economics to literature to movies – and increasingly take place at trendy locations like restaurants and art centers.

Danil Perushev, who created the web site along with three friends, told The Moscow Times that such lectures have always been offered in the cities, but the only way in which people knew about them was through word-of-mouth.  The economic crisis has also led people to seek out inexpensive ways of spending their time, he said.
