Thanks to skewed media potrayals of the international dating community, the general public is suspicious of, if not downright hostile to, Russian dating. After all, who hasn't read a disturbing article or viewed a frightening news report about Russian scammers and/or Western men who prey on desperate women? However, while the Russian dating industry is far from perfect it certainly isn't as dangerous as the media would have you believe.
When it comes to Russian dating, news outlets unfortunately focus on worst case scenarios. Talk shows air "mail order bride" segments about men who were beaten and robbed in their pursuit of Russian women. Magazines print articles about foreign women who were abused or killed by their American husbands. Even Russian dating forums seem focused on worst case scenarios, with thread after thread of scam horror stories. No wonder so many people are turned off by Russian dating.
What the general public doesn’t realize is that the majority of couples who meet on Russian dating websites are normal people who go on to live normal lives. Naturally, these stories don’t make it to the air or to the magazine pages simply because they’re not as interesting as tales of heartbreak and scandal. The same is true of forum horror stories. While happy endings are nice, juicy scandal tales are far more entertaining and therefore far more prevalent both online and in the media.
Despite the persistent horror stories, international dating is no more dangerous than any other form of dating. The majority of men and women who use Russian dating websites have perfectly normal experiences whether or not they find a long-term match. If you're intrigued by the idea looking for love abroad don't let sensationalistic news stories stop you from giving it try.
