Are Russian Women Rude?

10. April 2012 by Christy 0 Comments

According to a recent poll, Russians are second only to the French when it comes to being rude. However, behavior many people consider curt or abrupt can actually be traced to cultural differences.

In a survey conducted by travel site, 17% percent of respondents said Russian men and women are the rudest people in the world. The French were the only nationality to out-rude the Russians, with 19% of the vote. However, Tatiana Danilova, SkyScanner’s Russian Market Manager, says Russians aren’t as rude as some might think.

“Russians can be more direct when talking, which may be misconstrued as being rude,” Danilova said in a statement. “However this is more a difference in culture than genuine rudeness. The Russian language is not as polite as English, so when Russians translate directly from Russian to English, it can sound rude to an English speaker even if they don’t mean it to.”

Perhaps you’ve noticed this translation trouble while chatting with and emailing the ladies of Russian Love Match. However, it isn’t just Russians that sound rude. Even men and women who speak a softer language, can sound curt and abrupt when trying to communicate in English.

Another Russian custom that can come across as rude is smiling, or rather not smiling. While men and women in the West have no problem smiling at clerks and strangers on the street, Russians find this practice odd and uncomfortable.

“It seems very artificial, and therefore, unpleasant for many Russians to smile politely, the way people do in America or Europe,” write the experts at “We like a sincere, good-natured smile as a proof of our personal affection to other persons.”

Learning about different cultures and customs is one of the greatest perks to international dating, however it can also be a downfall when cultural customs clash. The next time a Russian woman appears to be rude, ask yourself if she's truly being rude or if she's just being Russian.
